Pneumococcal vaccine: Controversy over CDC recommendations

CDC has recommended that pneumococcal-naive adults 65 years of age or older receive a dose of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13; Prevnar 13—Pfizer) followed by a dose of PPSV23 after 12 months or longer. However, experts have continued to debate this recommendation for the order of PCV13 and PPSV23 vaccines, citing a lack of supportive evidence, increased costs, and the complexity of widespread adoption.
